"I sit and I wonder sometimes...
where they've gone...
It was a bad year for Space Shuttles
It was a bad year for Ferdinand Marcos
It was a bad year for the Soviet Nuclear Program
But it was a good year for me and Greg LeMond. Greg won the Tour de France (I met him in Lisieux, France 3 years later)and I graduated from High School. My parents were pleasantly surprised that I made it with fairly flying colors. 25 years is a long time. Here we are in 2011...What is next?

McGoo is a nut
Got together with the ChopCult.com guys last nite at the Long Beach Convention Center for the Progressive International Motorcycle Show. It is always cool to hang out with Bill and McGoo for motorcycle porn, food and good times. McGoo had to pose on a lot of bikes and pick his nose behind the Harley Davidson interview cameras. Hopefully his nose picking shows up on youtube or something. The Forty Eight is Kristine's (my Bonneville Crew Chief)favorite bike these days.

Ahhh....Paris in the Springtime..
It is no secret to my friends that I like the French. Think what you want, but I am a francophile. Here is my buddy Frank (Atalier-Chatokhine.com) with his pre-unit Triumph 500cc. He wrenched for the French at Bonneville in 2010. Thanks for flying the Four Aces Flag Frank. If you are in France, you can also buy a copy of the Salt Ghost from Frank. Oh how I love thee Tom Fugle Belt...
LET ME COUNT THE WAYS.
1) Its freaking cool, not because the johnney come lately jackasses who did not know what a Cone Shovel was LAST week THINK that I should think that Tom Fugle belts are cool, but because it is a piece of MADE IN AMERICA biker history.
2) It was designed by DAVE FREAKIN MANN. This guy is not just a bonified legend, but because he DEFINED, ILLUSTRATED and LIVED the motorcycle lifestyle till the day he died and influenced each and every one of us wet behind the ears nerds who sneaked a peek at their neighbor's Easy Rider magazines when they were 8 years old.
3) It just feels great when you touch it, you feel like a part of something besides your own snively little world where you change a few handlebars and call youself a bike builder while working your day job and spreading your own brand of look at me internet commando horseshit. Hopefully it makes you realize you are a no talent absolute beginner who never has really done anything.
4) It humbles me and makes me feel like a wet behind the ears nerd, handlebar changer dipshit with no talent, because it makes me realize that we are not even standing on the shoulders of giants, we are groveling at the feet of these giants (Mann, Parti, Kaisler, Fugle, Ness) and always will be.
5) It has choppers on it.

I don't wanna be a dick BUUUUT...
When your mechanic says "we can help you out with that..." what he really means is "We can fix that for you IF YOU PAY US MONEY."!! I don't wanna go off on a rant here, but come on people. I don't do this for a hobby, I am not the guy who does this on the side for fun cause I have a day job. This JOB pays for me to live. Show some respect and quit trying to get it all for free.

Back From the Great White Dyno
Ah yes, another August trip to the Bonneville Salt Flats has come and gone. We fought the good fight again but were plagued by Magneto issues and managed to get only 100MPH out of the old 500cc pre-unit this time. BUT!!! Exciting news we learned a lot about burning Nitro-Methane. We ran 10% all week and got pretty good at knowing what we needed in the way of timing and jets to run that evil substance that goes BOOM at much higher velocity than gas.
Big thanks to my Crew, I could not have done it without you guys. Dave too!! He is just not pictured here because he had to go home early. Cheers guys, you rule. Thanks to John Glover for the awesome pics too.

Tony is at it again.
Tony Carabine is an English customer of mine. He is mad, mad mad for Indians, so when this little gem hit the market, he fell in love...AGAIN! So we are gonna pack it up and ship it to England. What Tony does with it is his business, but I hope he flings it around a dusty track somewhere. Heres to you Tony.

Super Stockers, Hats off to the Doughboy
Haha. I know Keith hates that but Bryan Burke, tattoo artist extraordinaire knew him when he was...well... Doughboy. Keith is now the Captain of the Ship at Big D Cycles. Bryan worked at Big D in Dallas, TX years ago when Jack Wilson was the boss. Ahhh the stories Bryan and Keith have to tell about Mr Wilson. Anyway, Bryan has his Grandfather's 1970 Bonneville that was lovingly and correctly restored by Big D when Keith was just a whippersnapper, well maybe second in command at Big D. I had a shot at getting it back on the road after a few years of slumber and it was a great pleasure to work on it. The bike was set up just right, I kept saying as I worked on it, "damn, why did they do that?" Then I would say "ahhh because they are freakin good at this stuff THATS WHY!!" So look for Bryan cruising Hollywood soon and visit his new tattoo shop DARKHORSE TATTOO at 4630 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90027 - (323) 665-7345. And hey, if you talk to Keith, tell him Wes said "go to hell."

Four Aces and Punk Rock
OK I never was much of a Punk Rocker, always dug a bunch of random Punk stuff, but was always more of a Merl Haggard, Classic Rock kinda guy. But hey, the stuff ROCKS and Yuppicide is one of your crazier punk bands. Apparently there are a whole giant ton of Punk rockers into vintage bikes, though (imagine that!!) Steve Karp, formerly of Yuppicide now of Speed Twin plays guitar and has a bad-ass Triumph. Note the best in the west sticker on his Guit-Box on Tour in Europe. Get some man!!

Tony and the Indian Crew in England
Usually when you talk about Indians in England, you gotta talk dots on foreheads, curryed rice and tandoori chikin, none of which I have any problems with at all. But we ain't talking about that sort of Indian. Tony Carabine of the Indian Trading Company in the UK has had me ship I cannot even remember how many old and newer Indians to England. Tony buys a pile of parts here and turns them into really nice machines over there. He has a cool collection of all sorts of neet stuff including a three wheel car powered by a V-Twin JAP motor featured in an earlier blog. Go Tony, check him out here http://www.indiantrading.co.uk/

Cycle Nerd #4 Sign Kit
I first met Kit at the old Long Beach Swap Meet, not sure how long ago. Where deals and friends are made. Kit was putting together a Triumph from a pile of greasy parts. We horse traded, we kicked tires. Kit built the motor BY HIMSELF, yes it can be done. Fast forward a few months and Kit has this far out, super clean, understated Triumph custom. Talk about garage built. He nailed it. And yes, he rides it too. Slab City Riot a couple of times, Beerbooters in San Diego from Redondo Beach. Lots and lots of miles. Now he is building another one. Sign painter by trade, Kit knocked out the badass artwork on my van. Kit showed up at a local watering hole when it ws 30 degrees in a tee shirt too, props! Kit is doing it and he is a super nice guy to boot.

#5 in the Guys that DO STUFF BLOG
Ok, you have seen press on Chopcult.com about this guy recently, but I am not sure enuf can be said about one of the hardest charging, yet humblest dudes I know. Tyler Malinky of Lowbrowcustoms.com. Tyler has taken a business as a sign painter and turned it into a world powerhouse of motorcycle parts sales. But that aside, Tyler just has this wierd attitude about him. He works on motorcycles!!! He told me once, well I am gonna sell Harely parts on my site, so I better learn to work on Harleys. So he hauls off and is building a Panhead. Last year he made a freakin Bonneville dream come true by building and racing his own bike at the Salt Flats. You don't know how many times I have heard that guys are gonna do this and just never seem to get around to it. You know why? Beacuse it takes a major, major commitment to build a Bonneville bike. It takes a sack full of 6 pound nuts, damn it!! I built his motor last year, but you know what? He is building a whole nother bike this year and doing his own motor!!! The dude rocks, LowbrowCustoms, truely where the action is.

Blogs: Do-ers and Dreamers
I been trying to update my blog more often. I figured nobody cares about them, but my internet savvy friends say do it more often. So I checked out some other people's blogs to get some ideas and I came up with some depressing news. Most blogs SUCK!! Not because they are not updated, but because they are updated with crap. Seems like for the most part two kinds of bloggers exist. Those that post a bunch of random pics of the past and present but never really do anything except...well, post a bunch of random pics of past and present. The "my favorite lunch spot" legend in your own mind blogger comes to mind. "Ooooo, look at the hamburger I am having, it is the BEST hamburger on the planet and I, I, I am so cool, way cooler than you, for eating it. Don't you wish you could be me and eat this burger?" Then there are those that post a bunch of pics about all the cool shit THEY are doing. Cause they seem to be the only thing going in Po-dunksville, Nowhere where they live. "oh look at the cool bike I am building, look how IMMMMMPORTANT I AM." "I am gonna have ten bikes for sale at the Born Free show so you can buy a bike from me that sucks, but is cool cause I say it is cool. Watch for updates on MYYYYYYY bikes and how cool I am."
So anyway, I decided I might just look like the other dipshits out there if I post too much about what I, I, I, (ME ME ME) am doing. So here goes, the Wes White blog series about guys who are DOING shit, not just posting copius pics of 70s bikers and other dumb crap.
1) David Bird: David has probably been welding since before there were TiG Machines. He makes Hardtails and full frames for Triumphs and Yamahas and sidelines in freakin hotrod chassis (chassi?). He rocks and he has a bunch of jigs for the stuff he does. I been to his place, he is the real deal. He has also NEVER, and I mean NEVER had a complaint about his work or his work ethic. Legions of junior welders have come and gone (anybody remember Casey Tallon?) promising to have the next greatest hardest core hardtails for Triumphs. Well David has them, nobody else. Why send your money to a guy who is not gonna be in business in 6 weeks? Send it to David (through his retailers) and be guaranteed he is not gonna get behind and you are gonna have to ask for your money back or call him out over the internet. Dig it bitches.
